The Adoption Process

Please drop by our shelter any time--Thursdays through Saturdays 11:00 AM--6:00 PM, and Sundays 11:00 AM--5:00 PM--to meet some of our wonderful dogs and cats. The Pets In Need Client Services team is trained to help you find the right lifelong companion for you and your lifestyle. To help them accomplish this, you will be asked to complete our Adoption Profile. If you find a pet you are interested in, you can spend some time with that pet so you can get to know each other. (If you are interested in adopting a dog, Pets In Need does require that all people living in your home meet the dog to be sure that everyone will like each other. This includes any dogs living with you.)

Once you've found your match, the adoption process begins. The adoption process takes approximately a half hour. If Pets In Need declines to adopt a particular animal to you, the reasons will be discussed, and we will make every effort to insure that you have the information you need so you can prepare to have a pet at some other time or to adopt a different dog or cat.

If you adopt an animal from our shelter, a Pets In Need Client Services Representative may want to visit your home prior to the animal going home. This visit allows our trained counselors to help identify any hazards not discussed during the interview or to help you with any questions you have regarding pet behavior. After this visit, you and your new pet can begin the adventure of life-long friendship!

If you don't find the perfect dog or cat your first time at the shelter, please plant to come back. We frequently get new animals.

Subsidized and Free Veterinary Care

The Mahoney Fund realizes a dream of Jean Mahoney to ensure that all people can have the companionship of a pet regardless of their financial circumstance. Pets In Need provides assistance to low-income individuals for veterinary care, including spaying and neutering for their dogs and cats, on a funds available basis. (You must be able to prove that you are a resident of San Mateo or Santa Clara County.)

The Crockett Memorial Fund was established to facilitate the important animal human bond for senior citizens. Pets In Need assists these individuals with veterinary care. Regular clinics are held at Senior Centers throughout the area. Senior citizens can bring their companion pets for an examination by a veterinarian and vaccinations for only ten dollars. Low-income seniors can also obtain assistance for other more comprehensive veterinary care through the Crockett Memorial Fund. (You must be able to prove that you are a resident of San Mateo or Santa Clara County.)

Listing Service Adoptions

Pets In Need has a relatively small shelter. However, we are able to help more animals find new homes through our unique Listing Service Adoptions. People who must find a new home for their pet can list the availability of the pet with Pets In Need. Prospective adopters may see a photo and description of your pet on our website and in a binder at our shelter. If someone is interested in your pet, s/he will contact you directly.

Pets available through our Listing Service are listed in the Adoptable Pets section of our web site.

Adoption Gift Certificates

Consider giving an adoption gift certificate to let the recipient pick the perfect pet.

Canine College

Pets In Need carries out community education programs that include dog training classes called Canine College. This program was developed to help individuals train their pets and correct behavior problems that could lead to the surrender of a beloved pet at the local public shelter. Lack of training and/or the presence of behavior problems has been cited by the Humane Society of the United States as one of the most significant reasons that dogs are surrendered for adoption. Pets In Need urges you to consider training newly adopted puppies and dogs as soon as possible. And, consider training or obtaining other behavior advice for your current pet, exhausting all other alternatives, prior to taking them to a shelter. The chances are, if the pet is not helped to develop positive behavior, you will either pass the behavior problem to someone else or the animal will be euthanized because it may be considered unadoptable at a local public shelter.

Kitten Rescue Program

Since 1992, Pets In Need has operated a highly successful program focused on giving unweaned and orphaned kittens a new chance at life. We call this effort the Kitten Rescue Program.
