Do You Have Room In Your Heart — and Home — for Some Big Paws?

Calling all lovers of big dogs! We need your help.

Pets In Need’s Cause for Big Paws Program saves large breed dogs from being put down.

Representatives from Pets In Need regularly travel to shelters in the Central Valley and East Bay that may have less capacity to house big dogs because of financial or space constraints. Pets In Need rescues those that are at greatest risk for being put down and either cares for them at their shelter or places them with foster families until they are adopted.

“We have a number of wonderful large breed dogs come through our shelters each week,” said Foster Manager Audra Farrell. “As fantastic as our shelters are, many of these dogs are happier living in a foster home as they wait for a permanent adoptive family. We are in need of more foster volunteers and of course, adopters, who are willing to open their hearts and homes to these lovable dogs.”

Big dogs are slower to get adopted and at greater risk for being put down for a variety of reasons, including because of breed restrictions that limit apartment residents from adopting large dogs and because they are more expensive to care for than smaller dogs.

Those interested in becoming a foster can apply online.
