Lost Pet? Here's What to Do: A Complete Guide

Follow our guidelines to increase the chances of a happy reunion in the case of a lost pet.

Losing a pet can be a distressing experience, but knowing what steps to take can greatly increase the chances of a happy reunion. If you find yourself in the unfortunate situation of having lost your pet, don't panic. In honor of Lost Dog Awareness Day, we’d like to share some steps on what you should do:

1. Check Local Shelters

If your pet has gone missing in Palo Alto, Los Altos, or Los Altos Hills, they may end up at our Palo Alto shelter. You can view stray pets at the Palo Alto shelter here.

However, if you've lost your pet in Redwood City, please contact Peninsula Humane Society, as our Redwood City shelter does not accept strays from the Redwood City area.

Additionally, check with other shelters in the area regularly. A list of local shelters can be found here.

2. File a Lost Animal Report

We recommend filing a lost animal report. Reports are kept in our lost and found binders at our Palo Alto shelter and checked when stray animals are brought in. If you lost a pet in Palo Alto, Los Altos, or Los Altos Hills, file a lost report with us:

If you live in a city adjacent to our service area (Redwood City, East Palo Alto, Menlo Park, or Mountain View), we recommend filing a report with us in addition to a report with your local shelter. For all other cities, please file a report only with your local shelter.

3. Utilize Online Resources

  • Check online at 24PetConnect and Finding Rover.

  • If your pet is microchipped, report them missing with their microchip company.

4. Spread the Word

  • Distribute lost pet flyers within a three-block radius of your home.

  • Post on neighborhood social media sites such as NextDoor and Craigslist.

5. Stay Hopeful

Losing a pet is a stressful experience, but with these steps, you can maximize your chances of being reunited with your beloved companion. Stay hopeful and proactive, and remember, many lost pets are eventually found and returned home safely.
