Attention: Scam Targeting Families of Missing Pets

We’ve received reports of a disturbing scam targeting individuals searching for their missing pets. Scammers are posing as “Palo Alto Shelter dispatch”, “Palo Alto Animal Services supervisor”, or staff from Pets In Need. They claim your pet has been found, injured in a car accident, and demand payment for emergency surgery via Venmo, Paypal, or CashApp. We have reported this scam to the police and are working collaboratively with law enforcement personnel.

In some cases, the scammers have also sent text messages to the pet owners after calling them.

Please remember: Pets In Need never demands payment over the phone for medical emergencies. Do not pay for medical fees over the phone. Any medical fees from Pets In Need can be paid at the shelter.

Stay informed, stay cautious, and report any suspicious activity to your local police department. Share this message to protect fellow pet families!
