Where It All Begins: The Volunteers Behind Every Second Chance

Walk into either of our shelters on any given morning, and you’ll notice a familiar rhythm. Dogs heading out for walks. Cats settling in for breakfast and a bit of one-on-one attention. Clean laundry stacked and ready to go. A steady hum of activity that keeps everything moving.

Much of it starts with volunteers.

Before the doors open, before adopters arrive, that rhythm is already in motion.

As Volunteer Appreciation Month comes to a close, we’ve been reflecting on something we see every day. The impact of our volunteers doesn’t begin or end with a single month. Pets In Need depends on a community of people who return week after week, bringing consistency, care, and energy into every corner of the shelter.

Where Connection Begins

The bond between people and animals is powerful. It steadies a nervous dog. It turns a simple walk into the best part of the day. It helps a shy cat rediscover that closeness can feel safe.

At Pets In Need, that connection often begins long before an adoption. Many of the animals in our care are learning, sometimes for the first time, that people can be patient, consistent, and kind. Those early experiences matter. They shape what comes next.

Supporting Dogs, One Step at a Time

Our Dog Caregivers maintain clean spaces, steady routines, and a sense of structure that helps each dog feel secure. Dog Matchmakers and Walkers build on that foundation, helping dogs gain confidence, stay active, and connect with potential adopters.

On weekends, Doggy Day Out volunteers take high-energy dogs out for a few hours, whether it’s a walk through a park or time on a nearby trail. For many dogs, those outings are more than exercise. They offer a reset, a chance to explore, and a glimpse of life beyond the kennel.

Care for Cats, Rabbits, and Small Animals

Cat Caregivers handle the daily rhythm of feeding, cleaning, and spending time with our cats so they remain comfortable and social. Cat Matchmakers guide adoption introductions, helping families find the right fit based on personality and lifestyle.

Rabbit Matchmakers do the same for our small animal residents, a group that often receives less attention but benefits just as much from thoughtful placement and care.

Alongside our Medical Team

Much of this work happens in partnership with our veterinary team. Surgery Assistants help keep spay and neuter days moving with care and attention. Our Ringworm Treatment Team takes on the patient, often weeks-long process of helping kittens recover before they are ready for adoption.

At our vaccine and spay and neuter clinics, volunteers guide families through busy mornings, offering a calm, welcoming presence that keeps everything running smoothly.

On the Road and At the Front Desk

Animal Ambulance volunteers provide transportation for animals in need of care, from veterinary visits to wildlife rehabilitation support. It is flexible, on-call work that fills a critical gap when timing matters.

Support and Welcome Volunteers are often the first point of contact for visitors. They greet guests, organize materials, and help prepare for events like Party Like An Animal. Their work creates a sense of order and ease that carries throughout the building.

What It All Adds Up To

In the first four months of 2026 alone, our 300+ active volunteers contributed roughly 5,000 hours of service.

You can see that impact in the daily flow of the shelter. In the walks, the quiet moments of care, the routines that help animals feel steady again. Over time, those individual efforts build something larger, not just better outcomes, but a community grounded in compassion and shared purpose.

Every day, new stories begin here.

A Community to Be Part Of

If you are reading this as one of our volunteers, thank you. For the early mornings, the late evenings, the patience you bring to animals who need time, and the quiet joy of seeing them move on to their next chapter.

You are part of what makes this work possible. Day after day, in ways both visible and behind the scenes, you help create a place where animals can begin again.

If you’ve been thinking about getting involved, there is a place for you here. As we move into the next season of this work, volunteer recruitment opens May 1.
