About Herbie

Estimated age: 1 year
Gender: Male
Size: 19 lbs.
Location: Redwood City

Herbie is the type of dog that is always watching you from a distance, but at the same time can’t make up his mind about whether he wants to be near you or not. He’s full of curiosity and will follow you to see what you’re up to. Maybe he likes to gossip, we’re not sure, but he can be nosey! At the same time, he can be a bit independent and likes to hang out on his bed or sunbathe in a warm sunny spot. Herbie has opinions and will let you know when he wants you to come back if you’re lucky to get into his club. As we continue to learn more about this pup, we invite you to visit and see him for yourself and all of our other adoptable pets.

Here’s what his foster parent has to say:

When meeting new people, Herbie quickly sniffs them and plops onto his back for pets and rubs. If you stop before he's ready, he'll eagerly paw with both front paws to ask for more. If there's anything this boy loves, it is his rubs.

For most of the day, Herbie is a quiet, sleepy guy, and you can hardly tell there's a dog at home except that he'll follow you everywhere. He'd be good in most home environments where there is always someone around. He's not a barker, and loud or sudden noises don't bother him. He's also good with other dogs.

The only time I've seen him get riled up was when we encountered a cat and squirrels on a walk, but he's manageable. He's great on the leash and LOVES to sniff around the neighborhood. He's big on marking, so walks are pretty casual and relaxed. Seeing strange dogs on our walks is nothing to write home about for Herbie. He is primarily interested in their smells and otherwise doesn't react to them.

At first, Herbie was uninterested in toys or play, but recently, he has come out of his shell and loves chasing balls. He still needs to learn to bring them back, but I can see fetch becoming his favorite game.

Update from previous foster parent 2/27/2024:

“A home where at least one person is home most of the time but still prioritizes training alone time. Except for the whining, he tends to be pretty quiet and isn't all that rambunctious, so a house or apartment would be good for him. He really seemed to enjoy sniffing on walks. He didn't care much for toys except when other dogs were involved or when he got random spurts of energy. He loves to chase energetic puppies.

The Fine Print:

Herbie has a history of a leg injury that may require surgery
